You all, when I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease about 13 years ago my first thought was, “I’m never going to be able to travel again!”  I seriously thought I was going to have to stop traveling because I just knew I wouldn’t be able to eat anything anywhere.  Granted, 13 years ago not many people had heard of Celiac Disease and we didn’t hear much about food allergies or intolerance’s.  Thankfully, being able to eat out has come a long way since then!  In the last 13 years I have gained some more food intolerance’s and learned that I can not only travel but, I also can really enjoy my trip and I have never ever gone hungry!  For the last several years I have been gluten and dairy free when I travel but I have traveled all over the world since my Celiac diagnosis and have always stayed healthy and enjoyed my trips! Here are some of my top tips for keeping your body happy while traveling!

1:  Plan ahead!

This is really the most important part of ensuring you can enjoy your trip and never be hungry!  First, plan to bring a couple of snacks that you tolerate well to have one the go.  I love Larabars!  They are so good and so filling!  I particularly love the Peanut Butter Cookie Larabars.  I also have been known to pack peanut butter or almond butter on most trips.  Justin’s makes individual packets of almond butter that are perfect to keep in a purse or backpack.  These are great to use on an apple or banana or even just to eat right out of the package for a boost of protein.  Nuts are also an easy thing to pack.  I almost always have almonds with me.  The squeeze applesauce’s would be a fun option for kids as well!  Besides having some snacks, it is also important to plan ahead with restaurants, resorts and cruises.  Any cruise line and all- inclusive resort should be able to accommodate your food needs but they need to know before you travel.  Some travel brands and destinations  are better than others!  That is where a knowledgeable travel agent can help you out! Walt Disney World is awesome about accommodating food issues.  They need to know ahead of time but, they will always have a chef come talk with you as well just to make sure everyone is comfortable with your exact needs.

2.  Review the menus ahead of time.

Most menus at vacation destinations are either on-line or posted somewhere on property.  Always review the menu so you have a general idea about what is offered.  There are some restaurants that may just be a little harder to find accommodations for you than others.  For instance, if you are allergic to soy, a Japanese style restaurant may be difficult.

2.  Be vocal about your needs and ask questions.

When you arrive at a restaurant at any of your vacation destinations, let your server know about your food allergies or intolerance’s immediately. Don’t just assume they know. Then ask for an allergy free menu and ask questions.  Walt Disney World almost always will send out a chef at table service restaurants but if you are cruising or at an all-inclusive resort you can always ask to speak to one.  Make sure you feel comfortable so you can enjoy your meal!

I hope this helps you feel more comfortable traveling with your food allergies or intolerance’s.  Most vacation destinations have become so knowledgeable and accommodating which will ensure you can spend your time making some memories!

I would love to hear from you!
