Baseball games are one of our favorite outings as a family in the summer! Between minor league teams and the majors, there is sure to be a baseball stadium fairly close to you! Taking your kids to the games will provide countless memories and can become a tradition your family does each summer! Here are some tips to make taking your children to baseball games effortless and so much fun!
Pick Out Kid Friendly Seating
Most children will not want to stay seated for all nine innings of a baseball game. In most parks there is more to see and do than just sit and watch the game! So, pick out seats on the aisle when you buy your tickets. Sitting on the aisle means you won’t have to crawl over other fans each time you need to get up. Another seating option is berm seating in the outfield. This is a ticketed area, but is basically just a place to sit on blankets and let the kids run free!
Find the Children’s Section
Find the children’s section and then plan to spend some time (and maybe a little money) there. We have been to baseball stadiums that had carnvial games, a rock wall and zip lining. We have also been to ballparks that had inflatables and playgrounds. Most baseball stadiums have a designated children’s area and believe me, your child will want to visit it! TIP: Check for kids promotions ahead of time. For example, Suntrust Park in Atlanta has days when the children’s section is completely free.
Ask What Else is Available for Kids
A lot of stadiums have an opportunity for kids to either run the bases after certain games or run across the field in between innings. Some stadiums offer fireworks after the games. Most stadiums offer tons of entertainment in between innings or during commercial breaks. Guest services or an usher can help you find out what’s available.
Check Out the Nightly Themes
Most stadiums have themed games a few times a week. We have attended themed games for Star Wars night, Lego night, UT night, kids Sunday and many more. Some themed nights even come with some sort of souvenir for the first people through the gates! So check your teams website ahead of time!
Save the Favorite Snack
If your child has a favorite ballpark snack, save it for a time when you want your child to sit for an inning or two without moving. Don’t buy it first thing! My little man LOVES popcorn and popcorn buckets are huge! So we usually buy it around the 5th inning and he sits still for a good 2-3 innings!! This gives us a break from getting up and down and gets us through my favorite part, the 7th inning stretch!
Bring a Glove to the Baseball Game
If you have chosen seats in foul ball or home run range, bring a glove! Nothing is more fun than you or your child catching a ball! Game balls make an awesome souvenir and catching a ball is an amazing memory! Please be on guard for balls in this area too. If you aren’t planning to catch a ball, be prepared to duck!
Explore the Baseball Stadium
This could also be “take some walks!” Some stadiums have more to see than others, but take a walk along the concourse, see the field from different angles, check out the different snacks and foods that are offered. Also, check out the stores for a foam finger or other souvenir to cheer on the home team!
Baseball games are great adventures for families! The best part is the kids can be as loud as they want! Yelling is perfectly acceptable!! We are fans of our local AA Cubs Affliate, the Tennessee Smokies, and the Atlanta Braves, but have also been to see the Durham Bulls and the Charlotte Knights. Each ballpark was different, but each of these tips work at each one! So take your kids out to the ball game and have a blast!
